
2005 Rules & Regulations
Boats
Every vessel propelled by a motor must have its name or number clearly
displayed in conformity with Alaska State Safe Boating Law.. If the boat is
so new that it hasn't received a name or number, the boat may be excused if
the owner has a receipt to show that application has been made. Numbers and
temporary certificates can be obtained at Alaska State Safe Boating Office.
All boats must comply with the State of Alaska safety equipment
requirements, particularly a Coast Guard approved life saving device,
accessible and ready for use, for each person on board. All boats must be
available for examination at any time.
Daily Prizes
$50 daily prize for top fish entered by man, woman, and youth. $20 daily
prize for Mystery Fish. Mystery Fish are drawn at random from the fish
entered that day. For each fish entered an official weigh-in ticket is
filled out. These tickets are then places in the drawing. Each fish entered
increases your chances to win the Mystery Fish prize.
Dates & Times
The 2005 Derby will begin on August 13 and end on Aug 27. The contest runs
around the clock, beginning at 6 a.m. on opening day and runs until 4 p.m.
on the closing day. Refer to Weighing in of Fish for times.
Derby Boundary Limits
The outer Derby limits will be an imaginary line extending from the Cape
Resurrection to Aialik Cape. These limits will be patrolled. Entrants aboard
any boat seen fishing outside the boundary limits will be disqualified from
the Derby.
Eligibility
Any contestant who complies with the rules is eligible. Contestant must have
an official Derby ticket. All contestants must have a current sport fishing
license as required by the Alaska Department of Fish and Wildlife (children
under 16 years of age are not required to possess a sport fishing license;
however, adult supervision is suggested). Seward Chamber of Commerce Board
Members & Staff are ineligible to win tagged fish prizes. Derby officials
and all persons present at tagging are also ineligible to win tagged fish
prizes. All entrants shall abide by Alaska Department of Fish and Game
regulations.
Entrants fishing with Non-entrants
Non-Entrants, regardless of age, shall not fish in the same boat with
entrants, but may go along for the enjoyment of the outing. Violations of
this rule will disqualify the boat and its occupants for the duration of the
Derby.
Entry Fees
The Derby fee is $50 for the entire derby, or $10 for one day.
Judging Prize Fish
Fish must be caught within Derby limits. All fish must be hooked in the
mouth. Only Silver Salmon weighing three pounds (3 lbs.) or over can be
entered. Prizes are awarded by weight (heaviest fish receives 1st Place
Prize, while the last fish in Prize List receives at least $100 in cash
and/or merchandise). Any fish entered becomes the property of the Seward
Silver Salmon Derby (all proceeds from fish sales are deposited into the
Fish Restoration Fund). Participants may buy their fish back for $5 each, at
the time of weigh-in only.
Photographs
Photographs of contestants become property of the Seward Chamber of Commerce
and may be used for publicity purposes without compensation.
Prizes
With the exception of Tagged Fish, all prizes will be awarded within five
(5) hours after the close of the Derby. Prizes are based on weight of the
fish at time of entry. Ties for any place will be broken by a flip of the
coin. The loser will be entitled to the next prize in line. Prizes will be
valued at no less than $100 in cash and/or merchandise. Except for
sweepstakes, Tagged Fish, daily, and special prizes, contestants may only
place twice (2) on the prize list. Only persons under 16 years of age will
be eligible for youth prizes
All prizes must be claimed in Seward within thirty (30) days after the
prize list is made public. No merchandise prizes may be redeemed for cash.
No prizes will be exchanged. Final prize list is binding. All unclaimed
prizes become property of the Seward Silver Salmon Derby Committee.
Silver Salmon Derby Rules and Decisions
Derby Judge's and rules of the Derby herein described shall be
considered final and binding upon both contestants and sponsor(s) except
that the Seward Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has the power to make
decisions in all matters pertaining to the derby including eligibility,
weights, time limits, fishing limits, right to receive awards and all
matters relative to participation in and conduct of the Derby. Judges may
disqualify a fish or fisherman for any reason whatsoever and decisions of
judges on all matters pertaining to this contest shall be final.
Species
Should there be any doubt as to the Judge's decision regarding whether or
not your fish is a silver, it will be weighed in and a Fish and Game
biologist will render the decision. If it is not a Silver, it will be
disqualified.
Starting & Ending the Derby
The official start and end of the Derby shall be made by the firing of an
explosive, gunshot, and/or warning signal.
Tackle
Silver Salmon to be entered in the Derby must be caught with rod and reel.
Entrants shall fish using one pole only. Violation of these rules will
permanently disqualify and individual on shore, or a boat and all its
occupants.
Tagged Fish
Tagged fish qualify for prize money of $100 to $50,000. In order to comply
with insurance requirements, additional silver salmon have been tagged. All
tagged fish caught within the rules and regulations of the Derby will be
worth at least $100, if presented to Derby officials prior to the deadline
for verification.
Taxes
Any taxes on cash or other prizes are the sole responsibility of the
individual winner. Certain prize winners will be asked to provide their tax
identification number. Failure to do so will result in the withholding of
federal income tax at a rate of 30%.
Validation
Validated tickets must be for the day fish is caught to be eligible.
Validations will be done at ticket sales outlets. Opening day validations
will begin at 5:30 a.m. at all ticket sale locations.
Waiver of Liability
The purchase of a Derby ticket constitutes a waiver of liability absolving
the Seward Chamber of Commerce, it's officers, directors, and sponsors from
any and all damages of liability which may occur after entering the Derby.
Weighing-in Fish
All fish to be entered must be presented in the round at the Judge's Stand
in the Small Boat Harbor. The Judge's Stand will be open from 6 a.m. until
10 p.m. daily except the final Saturday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. An entrant must
show their validated ticket at the time of weighing-in the fish. Entrant
must sign the official weigh-in ticket. All fish may be opened and checked.
All fish weighing 16 lbs. or more will be checked by the Chief Judge or
Derby Chairman. If a "snag" mark is found on any fish, that fish cannot be
entered in the Derby. Any evidence of fish tampering will result in
permanent disqualification.
