Every season has its charms and its activities in Seward. A
year-round escape for Alaskans, and a great destination for visiting
friends and relatives, even locals might be surprised at all the
goings-on throughout the year. Here are a few of
the seasonal favorites, but if you just want to get away for a
spur-of-the-moment weekend, be sure to check the online calendar and
the news and events updates.

In Spring, the Seward area experiences "break-up" - when the snow and ice
finally go away! Getting out after a long winter is a must, and weekend
activities provide great
opportunities to get out. The Gray Whales journey along the mouth of
Resurrection Bay on their migration north from Baja beginning in late March.
You
can see them and their Orca and Humpback "cousins" from the decks of
early-season day cruises. The third weekend of May is "Opening Day"
for the small boat harbor with music, shops, galleries, and restaurants open
to welcome the new season. Military Appreciation "Week" kicks off on
Armed Services Day and runs through Memorial Day - Seward's way of saying
"thanks" to those who've served.

In the Summer, experience the land of the midnight sun! The long days are
perfect for filling your schedule with world-class fishing, tours of Kenai
Fjords National Park, walks along the waterfront, learning about the local
history and culture, or simply relaxing and enjoying the many fine restaurants,
shops, and galleries.

In the Fall, when the birch and poplar turn gold and the fireweed a deep
red, there's nothing quite like lacing up the boots and going for a hike
into the Chugach National Forest's many trails throughout the Seward area.

In the Winter, Seward is a beautiful wonderland, with sunlight glistening
off the snow during the day and clear starry nights. Visit the Alaska Sea
Life Center and treat yourself to a "behind the scenes tour" when the crowds
are small. If you are into the "quiet
sports", Seward has excellent Nordic ski trails minutes from town. For
those who prefer more adrenaline, bring your snowmachine and ride to Lost Lake. The Alaska
Railroad hosts a Holiday Train
ride from Anchorage to Seward in December. The entire community is a bustle
from retail and restaurants, to sleigh rides, reindeer and of course, Santa.
